League Rules & Info for Download

COVID-19 Update - THE PLAN for Starting the 2020 Summer League - Health officials control when we can start, but we can be prepared with a quick start when they give the 'all safe for tennis'.  The pros at all the clubs collaborated with the League to devise this Plan....

§  Registration has been extended through Monday, April 20.  All teams registered will be included in the season.

§  SHORT SEASON  If we get the 'all safe' anytime in May or perhaps even the 1st week of June. we will have a shorter summer season that will culminate with a Championship Week where all the teams play for their 'place' in the standings allowing everyone to continue play through the week of July 13.

§  COMBINED SEASON  If we get the 'all safe' in June or July, we will join the Summer and Fall seasons with a big championship in mid-October.    There will be a month 'vacation' break' (last 2 weeks in July & first 2 weeks in August) with play resuming the week of August 17.

§  REGARDLESS OF WHEN WE START, for the shorter or the longer season, we will do 2 courts of play.  If you already have a large team entered and want to split to 2 teams, I can help with the online part so it is easy for you.

2020 NEW Rules, Changes & Guidelines   Several new rules and guidelines were adopted for 2020 at the League Annual Meeting, attended by all the participating clubs, in February.  If you download the rules, you will see the new wording noted in RED.

1.    M Black B will play on Tuesday nights (not Wednesday nights) in Summer, Fall & Winter.

2.    Number of Courts for Summer PlayM Black B will be 2 courts in the Summer (along with L Purple AM & PM – Page 3 – II. A. 3

3.    L Purple PM will play on Thursday nights (not Wednesday nights) in Summer, Fall & Winter.

4.    Court SurfaceClubs provide hard surface courts – Page 2 – C.2

5.    Substitutes - Players are on the team schedule for the Regular season.  Subs are not regularly scheduled players and should be added right before the match for which they are needed.  For Registration, Players only – NO Subs    Page 3 – II.B.2.a.

6.    Players from clubs with 2 teams in same division – Still not possible to be on 2 teams in same division EXCEPT - The exception is for clubs that have more than one team in a divisionIF a team exhausts its roster and still needs a player, it may use a player from another one of its club teams; add to roster as sub before match that they will play.  A player may sub only 2 times for another team and is not eligible to play for the team on which they subbed in the post season.  Page 3 – II.B.6.

7.    Playing Out Matches – Summer – Play a 10-pt tiebreaker in place of a 3rd set.  Fall & Winter – Play until time is up and record score ‘as is’ – See Rules on Page 4 – II. E. 3. c-d for details.  Clarifying deviation with II.E. e. – Page 4   “e. Deviation from the rules, playing for more than 2 hours (Summer or Fall) or 1.5 hours (Winter) - ‘Playing it out’ is an option if courts are available and ALL players involved agree to it (and to any additional court fees) BEFORE the match starts (For entire duel or on a court-by-court basis).  THIS IS NOT NEW

8.    Length of Play for Semi Final & Final Matches - SEMI-FINAL & FINAL MATCHES are played by the same time rules as matches in the regular season.  Clubs must be able to provide courts for the minimum 2 hours to be able to host semi-final matches. Option to ‘play it out’ for semis, see 3.e. above, is same as in regular season.    Page 4 – II.E.3.e

9.    Heat Rule - EXTREME HEAT – If the heat index is 90 degrees or higher on www.weather.com (use zip code of match site) at time of play, must play match tiebreaker (1st to 10 points, win by 2) instead of a 3rd set (enter score as1-0).  Page 4 – II.E.6.

10. Match Rescheduling   The League values play.  Players sign up to play, not for defaults.  Every effort should be made to reschedule a match when a team has a conflict. Working to reschedule a match demonstrates good sportsmanship. A default is the last resort and will be entered only after all efforts to reschedule fail.  However, players should commit to the established team schedule as a matter of respect for all involved and reschedule only for important, unexpected reasons, not for convenience.   Page 5 – II.F.3.d.

11. Guideline for rosters – The Range for Play are the parenthetical numbers in each divisions name.  If all players are within the range for play, anyone can play with anyone.  Players above or below range require partners to be paired so that the pairing to follows the rules for that division.  A good guideline is - for every 1 player above range, need 3 players in range.

These Rules, new in 2018 & 2019 continue in 2020
1.  Beginning with the 2018 Summer League, Roster Ratings will be used for both pairings and court assignments.  The Roster Ratings are found ONLY on the team roster and will be the only ratings displayed on the roster.  The Roster Ratings remain the same throughout the season.  While Current Ratings are displayed on Player Profile Ratings Badges and on match records, current ratings will not be used for League Rules.

2.  Players will remain eligible in the division in which they first play for any following seasons during the year (year defined as Summer, Fall, Winter) even if during that year their rating goes above roster eligibility for that division

  • For example, a player rated 58 plays on a L Green B (50-56) team for the Summer.  Roster eligibility for L Green B (50-56) is 49 to 60.  By the end of the summer the player's rating is 61.  Despite her higher rating she will remain eligible to play L Green B in the 2018 Fall or the 2018-19 Winter Leagues.  Captains/Players will let Club Staff know and the Club Staff will contact the League to make sure the player is on the roster.
  • The intent of this new rule is to dispel concern about being able to continue to play in a division for players who are in the upper roster eligibility range of  any division.  Their place is secure all year!

3. Partial matches – If a match is called because of inclement weather or if diminished light (both teams must agree to stop) forces play to stop after the match has started the following rules apply:

a. The makeup match will resume at the point when the match was stopped; assuming the exact same players are playing in the resumed match.  Captains are responsible for recording score (Save as Draft) online and for noting service rotation and game score.

When play resumes for a ‘called’ match, the original match time limits do not carry over.  Play the match from the point of interruption to its conclusion using the rules of the particular season, as long as that playing time is not more than 2 hours.

Entering Non-League Match Results

All League players are able to enter non-League match results.  These results can count for player ratings and serve to make ratings more accurate by including more than League matches in ratings calculations.  The League encourages non-League match entry but respects those who prefer not to have non-League matches included.  Below is information about entry and verification of non-League play.

The Basics

  • YOU are in control of what non-League matches are included in your rating calculation.  You are responsible for keeping your email accurate in your profile and for responding to emails if a match in which you played is entered.
  • Click on this link to see how to enter non-League scores  Video on entering Casual Match Scores
  • To see your options if another player in your match entered the scores, click on this link to download the How To For Casual Match Score Verification

  • League Guidelines for Casual Play
  • Every player has the option and the responsibility to control which, if any, non-League (non-Event) matches will become a part of his/her Tencap Rating calculation.  Notification of a match entry will be emailed to all participants in any entered match.  Players are responsible for keeping an accuate email address in their profiles and for adjusting their email settings to accept Tencap email.
  • Mentioning the intent to enter match results at the start of a match is courteous.  If not mentioned prior to play, communication prior to entry is also courteous.
  • Respect others and other's desires to enter results or to reject results for themselves.  Negative conversation about individual preferences is not productive or respectful.
  • If a match was played as entered, use Reject Option 2 to reject the match for your Tencap Rating. (see the How To above to understand about this option).
  • Please try not to use Reject Option 3.  The League would prefer not to adjudicate non-League matches.

On May 8, 2012 a detailed email with complete information was sent to all League members.  You can download that email by clicking on this link.  May 8 Email - Tencap Tennis, the League & Match Entry
